Felt vs fell
Why can’t I say “At the end of the movie, she felt in love with him…”?
I must have heard students misuse this word hundreds of times. These two words look and sound similar and often get mixed up by learners when they speak. But fell and felt come from different base verbs….
felt – past tense and past participle of ‘to feel’
feel-felt-felt
Examples:
I felt better after I had a good dinner.
The sand felt soft and cool under my feet.
He hasn’t felt this well for a long time.
I’ve never felt so scared in my whole life!!!
fell – past tense of ‘to fall’
fall-fell-fallen
Examples:
He fell from a tree and broke his leg.
Unfortunately, I fell down and hurt myself.
Share prices fell on the stock exchange this yesterday.
I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him. (Idiom: fall in love with someone)
